Tieto to provide the Finnish Border Guard with a Maritime Search and Rescue Command and Control System

01 June 2018

The Finnish Border Guard has chosen Tieto to provide a new maritime search and rescue (SAR) command and control system. The system is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2020. It will digitalise the exchange of information between maritime SAR command centres and search and rescue units and make it more effective. The command and control system will also offer a variety of ready-made interfaces to connect new, external services and functions to the management of maritime SAR operations.

“The Border Guard has set high standards of availability and security for the command and control system as it is a key part of national maritime safety infrastructure. In addition to high availability, Tieto’s system provides us with good tools to develop our day-to-day operations and to share the Border Guard’s maritime situation awareness with other authorities,” says Petteri Leppänen, Maritime SAR Adviser of the Border Guard.

The new information system will be utilised in the maritime SAR coordination centres in Turku and Helsinki for managing SAR operations, maintaining situation awareness and exchanging information between the centres and mobile marine SAR units.

The system will also exchange data with the information systems of other authorities and make more efficient use of a variety of common government services and registers. With the new command and control system, the nearest appropriate unit is expected to arrive at the incident location faster in demanding SAR incidents.

“The new maritime SAR command and control system will significantly enhance the cooperation between the authorities and other parties involved in SAR operations. It can improve safety on Finnish sea areas and, more broadly, in society as a whole. With the new maritime SAR command and control system, we can utilise the latest technology and our long experience in supplying and maintaining demanding systems that support comprehensive security”, says Anne Räsänen, Tieto’s Vice President, Public, Healthcare and Welfare Finland.

Maritime SAR services undertake a number of activities such as assisting ships and vessels in difficulty, accident prevention, search and rescue, medical consultations and patient transport from Finland’s sea areas and islands.
