Lowell's investment to Workday: transparency and truly global HR processes

Implementing Workday helped Lowell to unify HR processes across their operations and empowered their people

Hannastiina Anderson

Head of HCM & CloudBorn, Tietoevry Tech Services

The challenge

Lowell had different HR tools to use across the Group after growing through acquisitions. They wanted one central tool for HR actions and reporting with extension of manager and employee self-services to cover as much of the organization’s people processes as possible. They wanted harmonized business processes while eliminating manual process steps and related human errors. Increasing the electronic transactions in HCM area to support daily work and improve data quality was also on the wish list.

The solution

"Lowell’s ambition was to provide one platform for the entire Lowell Group with a service model which makes it easy for our colleagues and managers, and efficient for our People Team to use."

Lowell Nordics Workday implementation was the 4th phase in the Lowell-wide Workday implementation project, and it was done in partnership with Tietoevry.

The Nordic implementation project consisted of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Estonia with approximately 1000 employees. Austria ran with the Nordics roll-out and the plans were aligned with the implementation project. In the project scope were HCM Core, Core Compensation, Absence, Recruitment and Integrations. For Performance and Talent Management Lowell used existing performance process and templates with only testing and support required. The Nordic countries were also in scope for payroll integrations and global payroll deployment alternative was investigated per each country.

Workday deployment methodology was followed in the implementation project. The Nordics implementation project has been successfully completed by Lowell and Tietoevry within a challenging timeline of 6 months. Project kicked off in June 2018 and the go-live was in the end of November 2018.

Following the investment in Workday, managers and colleagues have far more access to on-line information, tools, and analytics to support People processes across the organisation. Workday supports daily work in the HCM area by automation of operations related to HCM processes through implementation of defined platform functionalities such as interactive forms.

The project was run very quickly. Key success factors for the speed in implementation was the great project team which was a combination of people who knew the Lowell processes thoroughly, people who had done some of the earlier implementation at Lowell and Workday experts from Tietoevry. The team also excelled in good collaboration!
