The challenge

To serve better Finnish citizens in various life events Finnish Digital and Population Data Services Agency (also known as DVV in Finnish) needed to develop cost efficiency, scalability, and agility of its digital services to improve user experience. The Suomi.fi Service Catalog was on-premises solution that was costly to maintain, required heavy maintenance and had slow development cycles.

The solution

Tietoevry provided the Finnish Digital and Population Data Services Agency a team of highly skilled developers responsible of all development from the beginning of the project 2016. The majority of the development team work in Tietoevry’s Czech site in Ostrava. The daily work is mainly carried out using modern digital communication tools with occasional visits to Finland. The customer satisfaction results have been on the highest level during the whole project and the Customer has given excellent feedback on the good co-operation and the efficiency of the development team.

As a part of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s AWS cloud migration journey in 2020, Tietoevry’s team migrated the Service Catalogue, a set of well-established web applications, into the Customer’s larger ecosystem of AWS services. The migration was seamless, utilizing tools such as Terraform, Docker and Kubernetes. The applications were migrated “as-is” but have since adopted more cloud-based technologies, such as RDS, AWS Lambda, S3 and Kinesis.

Migrating running projects from on premise to cloud also meant a major change in the ways of working, from pure development to modern DevOps practices. After a year in AWS cloud, all parties have seen improvements – Customer, users of the apps and developers.
