Towards cloud-native network connectivity with Open RAN DU

How to optimize the performance of an Open RAN DU (Open Radio Access Network Distributed Unit) software product? A high performing Baseband Software running on COTS infrastructure provided an answer.

Vice President, Telecom Industry Business

The challenge

A global network equipment provider (NEP) introduced a new Open RAN DU software product and aimed to deploy Layer 1 and Layer 2 (Baseband) RAN software with commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) infrastructure. This exposed them to performance challenges such as limited traffic throughput and high energy consumption in data processing.

The solution

We developed a high performing Baseband Software running on COTS. To meet aggressive time-to-market targets, we used Intel FlexRAN reference architecture as a foundation and extended capabilities with higher-order MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and beamforming technique.

How Tietoevry delivered?

We enabled timely delivery leveraging our combined network domain and software engineering expertise.

Our software engineers engaged with the customer early in the Open RAN DU (Open Radio Access Network Distributed Unit) product development cycle. We advised on architecture choices, made algorithm modifications, definitions, and simulations.

Together with the customer, we developed a high performing Baseband Software running on commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) infrastructure. Our work included system design, feature extensions, simulation, SW implementation as well as selected parts of system integration & validation.

When we developed new software capabilities, such as higher-order MIMO and other optimizations such as forward error correction (FEC), it required modifications in the reference SW and optimizations across various parts of the FlexRAN Software as well as utilizing accelerators.

Along with the project, we scaled up the software development team, including responsibilities on related integrations, testing and final optimizations.

Our key Radio Access Network (RAN) competencies behind the success:

  • Strong RAN domain skills
  • Thorough understanding of the FlexRAN architecture
  • Experience and accelerators in hardening and robustness
