The challenge
In 2019 HSB Living Lab and TietoEVRY started a project called BeeLab. The overall goal of the project was to create a network of connected digital beehives, and the project intentions where to provide an even better understanding of bees' health and how to take care of them. In order to tackle these challenges, there was a need for a scalable, national and global Cloud environment.

TietoEVRY has installed an IoT Gateway and different types of sensors in all hives and then connected those to a scalable, national and global Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform environment.
TietoEVRY is offering project management, development services and overall operation expertise from our specialists in the Nordics, combined with global delivery capabilities.
Unique HSB LL, TietoEVRY (BeeLab) and Amazon/AWS relationship
- We use AWS as a provider for our global cloud services
- Researching bees is considered one of the most important areas from an environmental and ecological perspective
- We use Amazon web store when purchasing much of our hardware, such as sensors, etc.
- We see great potential in expanding our use of the AWS cloud services with advanced functionality, such as the need for big data and AI etc.
All hives are connected to TietoEVRY's cloud platform, AWS Cloud Service, to collect comparable data to help researchers gain a better understanding of bees and their communities. The connected beehives will also make it easier for beekeepers to monitor their hives.
All data is coordinated into the cloud, and paired with AI, the information can be analyzed quickly and in real time.

About the customer
HSB Living Lab is a research and demonstration arena including homes for students and guest researchers. HSB Living Lab is run by 12 partners to create a solid collaboration arena for new knowledge with a focus on social, economic and environmental sustainability. The building is located on the Chalmers campus area in Gothenburg and was inaugurated in the fall of 2016. TietoEVRY is an IT partner in the project to develop smart and innovative solutions for tomorrow's housing.

Connected beehives in public cloud
HSB Living Lab has all their data from the connected beehives coordinated into the cloud, ensuring contribution to research and conservation of biodiversity.
Scaling the cloud
HSB Living Lab keeps most of their IT-operations in the cloud, meaning they can scale their solutions and be more efficient in the future.
Time to innovate
By freeing up resources, HSB Living Lab can now innovate and test, putting them in the forefront of cloud technology.
A few of the cloud related areas we have worked within the BeeLab project are:
- Enabling a truly cloud native development and operational environment, that is globally scalable, powered by AWS
- Take full responsibility for the BeeLab implementation and operation, to ensure easily scalability for future global growth.
- Established new ways of innovating the beehives to efficiently orchestrate the growing eco-system of partners, such as beekeepers, scientist, researchers, government organisations and universities.
