Tieto joins global GENIVI Alliance to accelerate digital cockpit development, and future vehicle and software architecture

30 September 2019

Tieto joins the GENIVI Alliance to drive and develop standardization and interoperability in automotive digital cockpit systems. Joining a growing GENIVI community with nearly 100 members worldwide, Tieto is at the core of driving the standardized approach for multi-operating system and cross-domain Digital Cockpit adoption, as well as exploring the future centralized vehicle architecture and vehicle cloud computing.

The development towards autonomous driving and connected vehicles calls for an increased number of functionalities in the vehicle. Among these is the digital cockpit – a multiscreen and multimodal digital array that enhances the driving experience for the vehicle’s occupants. The digital cockpit places greater demands on automotive software flexibility and upgradeability, but also on eg. functional safety, security and reliability. This results in the need for multi-operating system integration and flexible platforms and architectures in the vehicle.

The GENIVI Alliance drives a standard and open source approach to integrate multiple Automotive Operating Systems, aiming for improved time to market and cost-efficient development of automotive solutions. The collaborative GENIVI community has nearly 100 members worldwide working with Android Automotive, AUTOSAR, Linux, and other automotive in-vehicle software.

‘’We are very happy to welcome Tieto to GENIVI,” says Steven Crumb, Executive Director at GENIVI. “The automotive industry can only benefit from having a broad spectrum of companies working jointly to enable the integration and interoperability of the numerous systems in existence. Tieto brings extensive and long term experience of working with Android, multi-operating system environments and contribution to open source. We are looking forward to working together to help achieve our new scope of driving standard approaches for integrating operating systems and middleware present in the centralized and connected vehicle cockpit.”

Tieto provides R&D services for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and tier 1 vendors with a focus on the Digital Cockpit, ADAS/Autonomous vehicle, and Connected Car. In these areas, the collaborative community and open souce approach to standards such as GENIVI plays a key role.

“Automotive software development projects require eclectic cross-domain expertise and a collaborative approach to multiple operating systems and open source software. Tieto has a strong history of delivering software excellence to different verticals, including Automotive. Our ambition is to drive standards and to actively contribute to Automotive communities such GENIVI,” says Viet-Anh Pitaval, Head of automotive business development at Tieto. “We are looking forward to further exploring with the GENIVI community the future of vehicle electrical and electronic, and software architectures going towards vehicle cloud computing. We see that in this area, Tieto can positively contribute and make an impact.”
