Digitalized beehive moves into HSB Living Lab

- will contribute to research and conservation of biodiversity

Bees and other pollinating insects are drastically decreasing in numbers all over the world, which can have severe consequences as they play an essential role in pollinating crops and maintaining biodiversity. To meet the challenges and contribute to research, Tieto has created a digitized beehive, equipped with connected sensors, to be installed at HSB Living Lab in Gothenburg.

On October 1, the digital beehive moves in at HSB Living Lab. The project will, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and connected sensors (IoT), facilitate the management of the hive, create healthy bee communities and work to preserve the biodiversity in the immediate area. Another goal is to contribute to a better understanding and interest in beekeeping among the residents in the "living lab".

“This digitalized solution means that we get to know the bee-communities even better. We can, for example, estimate how many bees that lives in the hive, measure how viable the community is and how much honey they produce. This is also a great way to illustrate the benefits of a digitized society, and in this case, how digital solutions can create a better society for both humans and bees”, says Mikael Ekström, digitization consultant at Tieto and beekeeper.

“We look forward to welcoming up to 80,000 new, buzzing residents in HSB Living Lab. It will be exciting to see how we can learn from this project in the longer term. In the short term, we know that it will help ensure local biodiversity, and we have already noticed a great interest among those already living in the HSB Living Lab”, says Madelaine Doufrix, project Coordinator at HSB Living Lab.

Mikael and his colleagues at Tieto are currently preparing the hive to be delivered to HSB Living Lab. The prototype that is in place outside Tieto's office in Kalmar has sensors that can measure the bee population, the amount of honey, humidity, air pressure and temperature in the hive. All metrics are collected on Tieto's online platform and can be read in real-time on a mobile or computer. In the future, Mikael hopes that with the help of technology, it will also be possible to detect outbreaks of diseases that affect bees.
