RECAP will develop the next generation of agile and optimized cloud computing systems to support the Internet of Everything. The outcomes of the project will pave the way for a radically novel concept in the provision of cloud services, where services are instantiated and provisioned close to the users that actually need them by self-configurable cloud computing systems.
Together with eight other research partners, Tieto with its research and development team in Umeå, Sweden participates in this EU-funded project that addresses the challenges in capacity provisioning and remediation for distributed cloud applications. Part of the European Commission’s Horizon2020 programme, project RECAP intends to develop the next generation of cloud, edge and fog computing capacity provisioning via targeted research advances in cloud infrastructure optimization, simulation and automation.
“In a few years from now, 5G and Internet of Things will be seamlessly integrated in our everyday life”, says Tom Leskinen, Head of Product Development Services at Tieto.
“5G will provide high broadband capacity wherever you are, supporting traffic safety and remote control of time critical machinery used in surgery or manufacturing. All of this will connect smart cities, buildings and wearables to the cloud. Applying Artificial Intelligence on this data can support many applications. For example earlier detection of health related problems will help you to early treatment. As one of the European companies in the frontline of this development, Tieto has been selected to participate in the RECAP consortium and we are very happy and inspired about this”, he continues.
Today, large-scale computing systems are built as distributed systems where components and services are distributed and accessed remotely through clients and devices. In some systems components are also placed closer to end users (radio base stations and other systems on the edge of access networks) in order to increase reliability and reduce latency, a style of computing often referred to as edge or fog computing. Computational resources and network capacity are still often provisioned using best effort practices. Experts perceive these practices as major barriers in the rapidly emerging Internet of Everything and the wider networked society.
The RECAP consortium comprises nine research partners from five European countries – Ulm University (Germany), Umeå University (Sweden), Tieto (Sweden), IMDEA Networks (Spain), SATEC (Spain), Linknovate (Spain), DCU (Ireland), Intel (Ireland) and BT PLC (UK). Following a competitive call for proposals, RECAP was selected for funding by the European Commission's research and innovation programme, Horizon2020. To fulfil the vision of RECAP, the project will define and implement a novel architecture realising the ideas relating to resource management, data science and analytics and intelligent automation. The project will run until January 2020 and will solve known constraints and offer genuine commercial benefits to the consortium partners and other European adopters of the RECAP output.
