Lassila & Tikanoja head office becomes a virtual power plant – solving energy efficiency and indoor climate quality challenges

29 January 2020

Lassila & Tikanoja (L&T) and TietoEVRY have piloted a new energy management solution. In L&T’s head office in Helsinki, the air conditioning systems were controlled using TietoEVRY’s distributed energy solution and L&T’s Smartti service. The primary goal of this project was to study the effects of energy consumption controls on indoor climate conditions, and to optimise energy consumption.

Lassila & Tikanoja’s core business is to keep its customers’ material, buildings and plants productive for as long as possible and improve the efficiency of raw material and energy use.

Lassila & Tikanoja’s pilot project studied energy consumption optimisations as well as the effects of energy consumption on indoor climate conditions. TietoEVRY’s distributed energy solution and L&T’s Smartti service were used to implement a virtual power plant (VPP). This virtual power plant combines the energy, or demand response, from distributed energy resources, such as buildings and electric vehicles, to be offered and sold to the power market.

One of the greatest benefits of the pilot is that L&T is able to join the national energy system’s demand response programme. Demand response means that the consumption of electricity is shifted from hours with high consumption and prices to more affordable hours or that the use of electricity is temporarily shifted to balance power supply and demand.

The solution’s automated control also reduced the amount of manual work required for energy management and produced reliable real-time data about different assets connected to the solution. Improving indoor climate conditions also serves to increase wellbeing at work.

“A solution that enables a demand response exemplifies a win-win situation where we can improve energy efficiency and make sure that conditions in the facility are good for its users. This kind of data-based management is a practical application of circular economy, where buildings are kept in productive use and which helps to retain or even increase their value”, according to Jaakko Pajunen, VP for Development and Strategic Planning at L&T.

“Energy efficiency and indoor climate conditions are hot topics in Finland. We are working with Lassila & Tikanoja to take control of both issues. DES is an ideal solution for anyone who wants to reduce their power usage and join demand response programmes: buildings, different industrial sectors, as well as retailers, distributors and producers of energy. It also serves consumers via different service providers. As the capacity of wind and solar power grows, the need for distributed energy solutions increases even further”, says Matti Seppänen, Head of New Energy Services at TietoEVRY.

Tieto and L&T will continue their partnership to develop building energy use and indoor climate condition controls.

TietoEVRY’s distributed energy solution (DES), is an operational business platform delivered as a cloud service. It combines energy resources with different ecosystem stakeholders for the management of various distributed energy services.
