How does it feel to ride in the first fully autonomous car?

Tieto and Goodpatch team up for a powerful Cross Reality (XR) prototyping of digital car experiences

18 December 2019

Driver and passenger experiences have come a long way – and they are evolving faster than ever. Automotive product development engineers and designers are already working on new features which will realize in the near-future cars. However, it is often difficult to prototype and test the end-user-experience with conventional prototyping techniques.

Tieto and Goodpatch, an international design firm, will together introduce Cross Reality (XR) prototyping capabilities, which will pave the way to develop new Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) in-car-experiences. Tieto is one of the leading providers of R&D services for automotive OEMs and tier-1-suppliers with a focus on Digital Cockpit, Connected Car, ADAS and safety-critical automotive software development. Goodpatch’s Engineering Studio, Athena, specializing in cross reality, has developed the software, cARVR, a powerful tool for automotive UX designers to model and test driver and passenger experiences. Jointly, Tieto and Goodpatch will accelerate prototyping, designing and testing the user experience of autonomous driving, and car infotainment in the real-like virtual environment.

"I believe the XR prototyping capability will truly catalyze the future of in-car-experience design by enabling the quick build of digital prototypes and user validation in Virtual Reality. This will ease and speed up the work of automotive designers and engineers and shift the focus from testing individual technologies to exploring the complete user experience," says Ari Aalto, VP, Automotive Product Development Services at Tieto.

“As a design company, it’s exciting to see how cars are increasingly becoming digital products, something we are very familiar with. XR gives designers the chance to take a new technology that doesn’t exist yet and test the interaction between the user and the prototype, and the type of interaction that the prototype invites,” says Boris Jitsukata, Managing Director at Goodpatch.

About Athena

Athena is a highly specialized engineering studio for augmented reality, virtual reality and gamification. Extremely passionate about the future, the Athena team uses immersive technologies to make tomorrow's reality today.

Athena is part of the Goodpatch Group, an international design firm, with a 160-person team across studios in Tokyo, Berlin, Munich and Paris.

cARVR is Athena’s a mixed reality toolkit for designing and testing experiences in and around the connected car. The car of the future is connected, autonomous, shared and electric (CASE). To make these new vehicles human-centered, OEMs need a way to prototype for these technologies efficiently. In contrast to other VR prototyping tools for automotive, Athena is focused on ease of use, interactivity and human-centered design. driveathena.com
