As part of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Confederation of Finnish Industries and Technology Industries of Finland are hosting a “Smart and Open Europe” seminar in Brussels on 15-16 October 2019.
The event brings together the private and public sectors, policy-makers and academia to discuss how the EU can better support its companies in their efforts to invest, innovate, create jobs and upgrade labor skills. Tieto contributes to the discussion on the EU’s single market, elaborating on the challenges and possibilities for the new European Commission to make Europe’s digital sector competitive on a global scale.
“Innovative digital technologies have the potential of providing European citizens with improved health and well-being, better public and private services, and meaningful new jobs. Ensuring Europe’s successful digital transformation should be one of the new EU Commission’s core priorities,” says Christian Guttmann, Vice President, Global Head of Artificial Intelligence and Data Scientist at Tieto.
The EU, being a major economic bloc on the global scale, has huge potential in digitalizing the economy. However, the majority of world-leading experts in the field of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are based outside of Europe, and when it comes to technological innovation, Europe is lagging behind not only the US and Japan, but also China.
“Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving into businesses, and the technology is fundamentally reshaping society. At the moment, we’re lagging behind in investments in innovative technologies – for example, private investment in artificial intelligence in the US was in 2016 more than five times that of Europe’s,” Guttmann says.
“At the moment, we are missing a major part of the needed industry talent with deep technology and science background. We need a more ambitious agenda to bring the world-class talent and required capabilities to Europe. Active and intense dialogue and collaboration between policy-makers, the private sector and academia is crucial to achieve this goal – we welcome the Commission’s Digital Europe initiative as a step in the right direction”, Guttmann concludes.
