Lumme Energia and Tieto pilot a next generation scalable smart energy system

13 March 2018

A Finnish energy company Lumme Energia and Tieto are piloting new kinds of energy services using distributed energy resources, the use of which is increasing rapidly. As the first step towards consumer scale smart energy services, Suur-Savon Sähkö’s headquarters will become a part of a smart energy system in the pilot.

The pilot consists of connecting Suur-Savon Sähkö’s headquarters’ building automation, Etelä Savon Energia’s energy management system, solar panels, battery energy storage, and electric vehicles charging to Tieto’s distributed energy management platform. This allows a holistic and centralized management and control of the physical assets to enable energy optimization, and the use of those assets as a virtual power plant. The virtual power plant is used to provide demand side flexibility for the national energy system, which would allow renewable energy production, such as solar and wind, to grow on a larger scale, replacing fossil fuel operated power generation.

The pilot will be a giant leap towards the emergence of services for consumers and businesses alike enabling them to become prosumers and active participants in the future of greener energy. For consumers, these new services can provide ways to optimise energy use and minimise costs by avoiding energy consumption when the costs are at their highest. In addition, the new services will also allow consumers to effortlessly engage as prosumers in demand response and make use of the cost savings and environmental benefits produced by distributed energy resources at home.

“We expect to get valuable experiences by this co-operation with Tieto and Etelä-Savon Energia. The pilot will help us to productize new services and products for different customer segments. The platform provided by Tieto is in essential role connecting the energy optimization system to the nationwide power system regulation. Etelä-Savon Energia’s capabilities in optimizing production and consumption brings great value to this smart energy system,” says Markus Tykkyläinen, CEO, Lumme Energia.

“The energy industry is in transformation, and digitalization allows us to offer new services and value to energy consumers. Distributed energy solutions also enable the controlled demand flexibility required, so that more energy can be produced using renewable and environment-friendly forms of production”, says Timo Karpola, head of New Energy Services, at Tieto.

Tieto’s new Distributed Energy Solution (DES) enables and promotes changes in the energy market. DES is an operational business platform integrating assets and ecosystem operators for the management of various distributed energy resources and associated services.
