Tieto´s intelligent head office receives leading certificate for sustainability

18 August 2017

At Tieto’s new head office in Keilalahti, Finland, every detail has been carefully thought of. Tieto Keilalahti Campus in Espoo has been designed to lift the employee experience to a new level, but also to go beyond the environmental requirements. Everything from energy consumption to the utilization rate of meeting rooms has been optimized. These solutions earned Tieto’s headquarters the first LEED platinum certificate for an existing building in Finland.

Tieto’s sustainably re-designed office spaces in Keilalahti were built to support efficient and flexible ways of working, with open spaces, co-creation areas and innovation hubs creating an activity based workplace. The refurbished office building was opened at the end of 2016 and has now been awarded first with the highest platinum certification by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in Finland. In Europe, there are only 19 buildings with the platinum-level LEED (EB) certificate.

“We are extremely excited to have received the LEED platinum certification. We are proud of our truly efficient and intelligent head office. The renewed building is using up to 60 percent less energy compared to our old headquarters – this is a great accomplishment in an office that has around 1,200 employees”, Tieto’s Environmental Manager Tiia Katajamäki states.

Tieto’s new head office also combines sensor technology with industrial internet solutions and data-driven analytics, offering concise information to the owners, operators and users of the building.

Sustainable solutions and enhanced employee experience

At the Keilalahti office, roughly 6000 sensors monitor the environment daily. One work desk is shared with 1,7 employees, resulting in a high usage rate of the multifunctional office´s square meters.  Also many energy efficiency measures have been implemented, including optimizing heat and ventilation settings and installing hundreds of LED-lamps and occupancy sensors. Remote building automation controlling system ensures continuous follow-up. The building runs on wind electricity and the cooling system utilizes sea water.

In addition to resource savings, a lot of focus has been put into sustainable procurement processes already in the planning phase. For example, roughly 40 per cent of the furniture is reused and all carpet material meet the highest indoor air quality requirements.  Also energy efficient ICT equipment, environmentally solid new furniture and cleaning processes are in place in Keilalahti.

All the nearly 1,200 employees working in the building were also involved in the redesign process. Employee education and engagement are an important part in continuing to use the building efficiently
