Accelerating climate action: Tieto’s 2040 net-zero targets approved by SBTi
Published: 20 January 2026
Tieto continues to advance its climate journey, marking a new milestone with the approval of its updated science‑based targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The renewed targets strengthen Tieto’s long‑term ambition to achieve net zero emissions across its full value chain by 2040.
The next phase focuses on emissions from Tieto’s value chain, such as suppliers, business travel, and commuting (scope 3 – all value chain emissions), which represents the majority of the company’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. The company is working closely with suppliers to set ambitious, science‑based climate targets and is encouraging more sustainable travel and commuting practices throughout the organisation.
Tieto’s pathway prioritizes rapid and deep emissions reductions first. High-quality carbon removals will be used at the point of net zero to neutralize residual emissions that cannot be eliminated. Our targets support the global goal of halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero before 2050, going even further to reflect the urgency of bold, science-aligned action today.
“Our progress to date demonstrates that results-driven climate action is possible when the ambition is embedded across the business,” says Ida Bohman Steenberg, Chief Sustainability Officer at Tieto. “We are proud of the progress we have made thus far, but our journey does not end here. The next challenge is to drive substantial reductions throughout our value chain to accelerate the transition to net zero.”
Tieto’s updated science‑based targets (SBTi‑approved)
-
Reduce direct and energy-related emissions (scope 1 & 2) by 69% by 2034, compared to a 2022 base year.
-
Reduce value chain emissions (scope 3) by 59% by 2034, compared to a 2024 base year.
-
Reach net zero across the value chain by 2040 by reducing scope 1 & 2 emissions by 90% (base year 2022) and scope 3 emissions by 90% (base year 2024) and neutralising any remaining emissions with high-quality removals.
In recent years, Tieto has made measurable progress in reducing its environmental impact. By 2024, the company had already cut emissions from its own operations by 87% compared to 2020. This has been driven by the switch to renewable electricity in all offices and the electrification of the company car fleet.
About the Science Based Targets initiative
