Save the harvest using AI

As part of the collaborative “FrostStrat” project with Tietoevry producers of wine use AI to counteract late-season frost due to climate change and save the harvest.

The challenge

As part of the collaborative “FrostStrat” project, Tietoevry supports farmers regarding forecasts to carry out anti-frost measures in time.

In 2017, late frost damage of 70 million Euros occurred within the Austrian viticulture and fruit growing segment. The reason for this was an increasingly mild winter and warm spring periods. For frost control measures such as sprinkling, air circulation and heating - farmers were missing information- updates such as small-region climate forecasts or an individual warning system for their orchard and vineyard areas.

The solution

The research project "FrostStrat" aims to solve these problem areas. Consisting of 14 companies and research institutions ARGE FrostStrat was founded for that specific purpose. Tietoevry has a central function as a conceptual designer and software implementation partner between the climate data recording, the creation of weather forecasts and the alerting of farmers based on Microsoft Azure.

The IoT platform collects millions of climate data such as temperature, humidity, and the farm area. This data is processed into a small-scale forecast model using machine learning. The result provides the farmer with a quick and easy hazard overview.

“For the first time, the climate model offers the possibility to accurately record topographical differences in temperature and to set the right control measures. Every hour in which heating with candles or other frost control measures do not have to be taken saves farms a lot of money and protects the environment”,
