Network automation for workload placement

Telecom networks are complex, evolving and geographically distributed and they are required to support multiple applications simultaneously. Modern telecom networks which use Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) techniques provide flexibility and agility but introduce complexity.

Automation, which supports planning, deployment and optimization, is critical to ensure business agility and resource efficiency and Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements.

The new cloud services provisioning system, designed as part of the European Commission’s innovation and research project RECAPserves the needs of the exploding amount of digital consumer and citizen services. The built and testing are done together with BT Group (a British multinational telecommunications company), Intel and academic partners. The new self-configuration system paves the way for automating the provisioning of cloud capacity for digital services using data analytics and machine learning.

At MWC we demonstrate solutions that support

Open edge cloud platform for fast application development 

Latency sensitive and data-rich application such as self-driving cars, AR&VR and advanced manufacturing cannot be served by traditional cloud computing or telecom connectivity solutions and require edge computing support.

Accelerated 5G packet processing for a lowered total cost of ownership and high throughput

Telecom networks need additional flexibility and performance to serve the needs of the new cloud-native and containerized services. This is especially critical for 5G and low latency services. Virtualization, service-based architectures, decentralization and desegregation call for new approaches to achieve performance and mitigate inefficiencies.

Jointly with Ethernity Networks, we demonstrate hardware offloaded 5G User Plane Function concept (UPF) on a container infrastructure. The solutions are data path offloaded to a programmable FPGA-based smartNIC which introduces low latency and high deterministic throughput and enable a robust, flexible and efficient service-oriented architecture for 5G user traffic.
