The Value of SaaS

Software-as-a-Service or SaaS has existed as a model for more than 40 years.

Jani Jääskeläinen / March 18, 2019

It took its early form as "time sharing" of large and expensive mainframe systems that were utilized by many organizations and target groups. Today, thanks to the internet and cloud, SaaS mainly is a cloud-based software licensing and delivery model in which software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted.

So, what's in it and why do we believe it brings value?

Tieto introduced early SaaS models more than 20 years ago with the purpose to become "one-stop-shop" to our customers by delivering solutions and services with end-to-end responsibility. The purpose back then, as is still today, was to decrease the complexity of purchasing IT solutions and services, and to limit the customers' need for coordinating multiple projects, services and vendors to achieve a fully functioning business solution.

Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, one of very passionate SaaS advocates once said: "Customers won't care about any particular technology unless it solves a particular problem in a superior way

With the new strategy, Tieto focuses on accelerating customers' design and data-led innovation and renewal. Adopting SaaS is an effective approach for renewal, allowing you to replace legacy systems with a modern software that is provisioned as a service. It allows our customers to focus on business innovation instead of infrastructure, platforms, technology and complex coordination of vendors and services. For me this is all about simplicity, convenience, competitiveness and speed. It allows us to take end-to-end responsibility of the platform, solution and services; and when properly designed and delivered on scale, help us increase customer satisfaction while maintaining a healthy business.

Whenever we deliver any of our mission critical Core Banking, Finance, Cards, Open Banking or Payment solution as SaaS, the operational delivery contains all necessary enterprise services including service desk, application management, support and operations, product R&D, software platforms, data center operations, hardware and connectivity needed - all bundled under subscription / consumption-based pricing model.

With a centralized approach to SaaS, we aim to deliver SaaS services that are always up-to-date, secure and compliant. We will leverage our newly streamlined organization to deliver consistent, aligned and efficient set of services to our customers across industries. Soon our Industry Solutions can be hosted in private or public cloud based on customer preference & geographic location. Our customers will benefit from lower up-front costs, faster time-to-market and easier upgrades to name a few. We at Tieto believe that this will lead to excellent customer experience and satisfaction which is an important success metric of our journey.
