Why are businesses jumping on the hybrid cloud bandwagon?

IT departments used to have it easy.

An organization’s hardware and software were strictly specified, and no deviations were allowed. This led to the infamous shadow IT, where people use their own software, devices, and unsanctioned methods to get the job done – often at the expense of security.

Now, the situation is different. In the spirit of “if you can’t beat them, join them”, the IT department has taken a more pragmatic approach. Instead of trying to secure single connections or devices, the approach to security is more holistic.

A great example of this is the hybrid cloud. As the world of business is growing more complex, organizations are looking for ways to add flexibility and efficiency to their operations. Hybrid cloud answers to these needs very well. In essence, this means using both different cloud services as well as your own servers, whichever is better suited for the task at hand.

This increasing complexity of the business also means that security in a hybrid environment requires thorough planning and a clear vision of business goals. Security cannot be enforced by buying more firewalls and implementing tighter restrictions: IT needs to work together with management and take the role of a business enabler.

Cloud is at least as secure as your on-prem environment

Some old-school managers may still believe that the cloud is inherently more insecure than on-premises solutions and resist change. They are lulled into a false sense of security by being able to physically see the servers (“the lights are blinking so it’s working”). This makes them feel being in control or the situation.

However, in modern IT you can never work in isolation from the rest of the world. To do business effectively, you need cooperation and collaboration with other parties. This, in turn, means that you have to trust your partners, even if you don’t know their security architecture to the most minute detail.

The biggest cloud players depend on being secure and reliable. If there’s a severe security breach in their environment, they risk being soon out of business. It’s in their own interests to keep their act together and prove their reliability 24/7.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can skimp on having a security plan yourself. At the end of the day, it’s you (and only you) who’s in charge of the overall security. But instead of paranoia and restrictions, you need visibility and alignment with business goals to reach a good level of security.

So, enjoy the freedom hybrid solutions give to your business! Use services that help you work effectively and serve your customers better.
